Torture or Sadomasochism: The Motivation factor

Torture

I laughed when I read that "the Thonon diet is quite tortuous if you are not well suited"...and it is important to note that "it is the best diet that can make us comfortable. If not, you will be tortured and the diet program will not last long. "

Sadomasochism

I asked myself: what is it that really influences us to want to lose weight, reach our ideal weight(whatever that is to you) and be in "shape" etc? So I looked into it and this is what I found. Body image is influenced, from our youth, by family environment, ability or disability, the attitudes of peers, the media and advertising, the fashion industry and cultural background. Bloggers from Live Life Get active wrote a great article on this subject in 2016. You can find the link to that here:

The Negative Influence

I think my best quality is that I am kind...
I love my butt

Healthy attractive bodies come in many shapes and sizes. When did physical appearance say something about our character or value as a person?!!

If you took a look in the mirror and asked yourself the following questions how would you respond? Remember to be kind to yourself and chose positive words to describe yourself with love and objectivity:

How do you perceive your body?

How do you feel about it?

How do you talk about yourself?

...remember that inside voice? what is it saying?

...how do you speak about yourself out loud? Ever call yourself something derogatory?

How do you think others see you?

I certainly hope you remembered to describe yourself objectively and kindly because if you did not then now we can understand how come you and many others may have slid into a pattern of self-criticism that leads to extreme dietary behaviours that are not maintainable long term. I believe in regular well-balanced nutritional meals that are wholesome and help you feel your best long term. I actively share recipes with that focus in my Real Meals Real People group on Facebook so I can influence people to make positive changes with long term results. I have seen some people release inches while others experience better physical fitness. Most people that have followed this philosophy of eating feel full by using quality food made with real ingredients in the right quantities. I know that I feel better when I choose this way of eating.

Spin how you think about yourself
Flip your head space

"Spin class" 101:

We all need to exercise and in this case I am encouraging you to exercise change in how you describe yourself!

I am no psychologist and I would never claim to know how to be one. Instead I looked up the concept of how to change how people perceive themselves negatively into a positive or loving way. The resulting research seems to indicate that we would need to encourage behavior modification if the self-description was critical, mean or downright cruel. The definition of as per allpsych.com is: "Behavior modification is the generic term given any process derived from learning theory where the goal is to change a person’s behavior or the way he or she interacts with the world."

WHAT?! There is homework?

Imagine writing down what your best attributes are when you describe yourself. What would they be? How do you feel about those great attributes or gifts? Would you talk about yourself differently if you read what you wrote each morning and night? How kind would you be when you spoke to yourself if you knew you were great because of ________? I imagine your self-worth and self-perception would go up a notch or two every time you chose to spin you head into a positive space. It would be a great challenge to see how many days in a row you could maintain that and how many days it would take before you start to believe your NEW kind "inside" voice! Imagine how that would feel-wow!!

Motivation

Write it down and Share it! wash, rinse, repeat

Write it down...
Motivation

I was asked for some ideas in my group last week on how to remain motivated with personal goals in life, menu and exercise. Suffice it to say that it lead to this article and all the information above because I felt I would be better prepared to answer the question with some research under my belt. Indeed it does help confirm what I practice-I use a journal. I use a little book called The Five Minute Journal because it suits my needs to focus on gratitude. Its simple format keeps 3 important items I choose on track and it is uncomplicated. The bonus is I am so very grateful that I will share a few of my gratitudes below. Multiple styles of journals are available for various goals. What are your goals?

Goal setting

Goal setting is key to the success of any item you wish to attain so choose a journal that keeps you focused on your goal. I occasionally use an accountability partner or a group to keep me in line with my current business and personal goals. I have many resources and yet all you need is to write down your goal and share it with someone that is interested in actively reaching a similar goal. Then keep in touch by discussing What worked/What did not work/What is missing to reach _____ goal. Imagine achieving something you set out to do close to the time you expected to do it! How would that feel?

I will leave you to dream plan and achieve. Please share you goals with me in the comments-who knows where those successes will lead you.... in the meantime here are my gratitudes for this week:

The Pantry Planner Thanks YOU
The blessing of community support

Special thanks to 2 people that have recently changed my life:

Diana Lidstone and Kim Willis. I would not be on this path to success if I had not encountered your positive influence and re-direction. I needed someone to remind me to focus on my abilities and both of you are steering me in the right direction using your gifts.

  • Thank you to the Epic life challenge group for nudging me to do meal planning and food prep to keep me on track. Thanks also for providing a safe community for members that need to share their challenges. I love to cheer those members on and it is great to be able to extend a kind note to those that hear the inner critic more often than not.

  • Cheers to My Real Meals Real People group because without them I would not fill my need to make a difference to others-the recipes and discussions are so much fun!

  • Shout out to my friends, Johanne and Kathy, for being a part of that positive journey when I needed to get out and walk and I was too tired to do so. Thanks to Lorraine and Debbie for supporting my community action ideas-giving back nourishes my soul. (I may need to do a gratitude every blog as I am sure I could write many more friends names...what do you think?)

  • A special mention to my Mom & Dad, Janice, Elaine and Cheryl for the support and love that is always there when I need to figure out where I am heading and I have lost my way.

  • To my husband Web-thank you for always cheering me on and giving me the space and support to fly.

I feel blessed because of that wealth of support found in my community of friends and family.

Regards,

Just Laura
